Don’t worry, just like last year, we were kidding. We hope you got a chuckle out of our latest April Fools’ joke. For many accountants, however, the situation the ‘launch’ highlights is unfortunately no laughing matter. That’s because the software most commonly used by today’s accounting firms to document their audits was built in the late 1990s. 

This seems unfathomable, considering how much the world has changed since then. Back in the 90s: 

• We called friends on landline phones connected to the wall; in 2025, we send texts, voice notes, and videos on our smartphones. 

• We listened to music on compact discs and traded mixtapes; today, a subscription to Spotify can give you instant access to almost every song ever made. 

• We waited patiently each week to watch the latest episodes of top TV shows Frasier and ER; in 2025, we binge-watch entire series on Netflix and countless other streaming platforms – whenever and wherever we want. 

• We dialed up to the Internet and crossed our fingers that we got a connection; today, the online world is everywhere, providing an always-on link with every fabric of our lives. 

• We stored our work on 3.5-inch floppy disks with a whopping capacity of 1 megabyte; today, we can keep as many terabytes (1 terabyte = 1 million megabytes) as we want in the cloud. 

These are just a few examples of how, over the past 30 years, the world has witnessed technological change at a rate rarely seen in human history. Audit technology, however, has not come along for the ride. Slow, unintuitive desktop software continues to be widely used in many markets.
